Oregon has more than 30 million acres of forests held by a range of public and private owners, each with unique objectives for managing their lands. How does the State of Oregon assure sustainability of these lands?

Oregon’s State Forester Doug Decker leads the Oregon Department of Forestry, whose mission is forest stewardship. During the our last SCC luncheon for this season, Doug will provide an overview of the responsibilities and challenges of this job.

Decker, was appointed Oregon State Forester by the Board of Forestry in 2011, and leads 1,200 employees and one of Oregon’s oldest state agencies in carrying out  a myriad of policies and regulations focused on forest stewardship. He directs ODF in preventing and fighting wildfires, managing state-owned forests, enforcing natural resource protection laws on private forestlands, advising landowners, and providing urban forestry assistance.

Decker holds a degree in journalism from the University of Montana in Missoula.
