#SalemOR Concert Band Fall 2016 concert: Fiesta! With conductor, John Skelton

SCB fbevent MAY 16_2

The Salem Concert Band, under the direction of conductor John Skelton, will celebrate Hispanic culture with our Fall 2016 concert, Fiesta!

Saturday, November 5, at 7 PM

Central High School Auditorium
1530 Monmouth St
Independence, OR 97351

The concert will honor many facets of Hispanic culture, beginning with music inspired by Aztec history and traditions. One of the most famous compositions of Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas, Sensemayá, is based on the poem by Cuban poet Nicolás Guillén.

A narrated fable about The Rabbit and the Coyote will be followed by a set of Mexican children’s songs.

A Venezuelan dance, the lively Joropo, concludes the first half of the show. Our audience will be entertained by the Woodburn High School Mariachi Band during intermission.

The band will honor the Day of the Dead celebration with two selections. The concert will conclude with a set of familiar Mexican songs, sung by Roberto Vazquez, a wonderful singer who recently moved to our area from Mexico. The concert celebrates the spirit of Fiesta, and honors many aspects of Hispanic culture.

Tickets are $20 for reserved seats, $15 for general admission and $5 for students.
