Today, perhaps more than ever, we must take responsibility for vetting the news we receive. Trusted news sources are often compromised by politics, ideology, and/or money. In this day and age when anyone can develop content based on facts, alternative facts, or just plain bull*&^%, click “send” or “post” and have it read around the world, we must be diligent editors of the “news” we receive, even from those we have traditionally trusted. With almost unlimited access to news, how do you know what is factual and what is not?

Todd Milbourn is an award-winning investigative reporter and journalism instructor at the University of Oregon. He got his start in newspapers at The Modesto Bee, where his investigation of a multimillion dollar housing scheme landed a CEO in prison and inspired a new state law on predatory lending.
