Wednesday Film Series Lineup Announced

Elsinore Theatre features Academy Award “should have won” Best Picture

The Wednesday Film Series at the Elsinore Theatre returns in 2018 to bring 11 classic and contemporary movies to the big screen. The spring line-up features films that, according to critic Tim Dirks, should have won the Best Picture Academy Award for their year. We have selected one film for each decade the Academy Awards have been active, plus a bonus feature.

JANUARY 10

King Kong

After a film crew shooting on a tropical island discover a giant ape who takes an interest in the female star played by Fay Wray, the ape is captured and brought back to New York City for public exhibition.

JANUARY 24

Sunrise

A man fights good and evil within torn between two women: a city stranger and his wife. Rick Parks will provide accompaniment on the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ for this silent film.

FEBRUARY 14

La La Land

While navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist (played by Ryan Gosling) and an actress (played by Emma Stone) fall in love attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.

FEBRUARY 28

Sunset Boulevard

A screenwriter is hired to rework a faded silent film star’s script only to find himself developing a dangerous relationship. Starring William Holden, Gloria Swanson, Erich von Stroheim and directed by Billy Wilder.

MARCH 7

Psycho

Alfred Hitchcock’s black & white thriller about a Phoenix secretary embezzles $40,000 from her employer’s client, goes on the run, and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother.

American Graffiti

“Where were you in 62?” A couple of high school grads spend one final night cruising the strip with their buddies before they go off to college. Directed by George Lucas.

APRIL 4

Brazil

A bureaucrat, in a retro-future world, tries to correct an administrative error and becomes an enemy of the state. Directed by Terry Gilliam.

APRIL 25

Babe

Babe, a pig raised by sheepdogs, learns to herd sheep with a little help from Farmer Hoggett.

MAY 2

Memento

A man juggles searching for his wife’s murderer and keeping his short-term memory loss from being an obstacle. Directed by Christopher Nolan.

Double Indemnity

An insurance representative lets himself be talked into a murder/insurance fraud scheme that arouses an insurance investigator’s suspicions.

JUNE 20

The Adventures of Robin Hood

When Prince John and the Norman Lords begin oppressing the Saxon masses in King Richard’s absence, a Saxon lord fights back as the outlaw leader of a rebel guerrilla army.
