Liveable Streets Day of Action – Sept. 22nd in #SalemOR

liveablestreets201609

Thursday, September 22, 2016

Join us as we travel from Portland to Salem for the Livable Streets Day of Action to call on our Oregon state legislators and Oregon Governor Kate Brown to prioritize funding for road safety and active transportation.

There will be two rides to Salem: a “general ride” for all interested participants that will be slower and begin closer to Salem, and a “speed ride” for those who wish to cycle the full distance from Portland to Salem at a faster pace.

General ride: 8:30 am Wilsonville WES Station, Wilsonville, OR 97070

Faster ride: 8:30 am at Salmon Fountain, 1000 SW Naito Pkwy, Portland, OR 97204
(People who express interest via email or facebook will receive eventbrite ticket links that will connect people with transportation options.)

Roadway fatalities in the state of Oregon have increased by 42% in just the past two years. Even worse, pedestrian fatalities have increased almost 50% in that time, and 2016 is on pace to further exceed this tragic toll. Our streets must be redesigned and reconstructed as safer facilities so that all Oregonians can walk and bike without fear of being injured or killed. Sadly, Governor Brown’s transportation committee has proposed a 14% cut in funding for pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. We call on the legislature and Governor Brown to acknowledge the road safety crisis, and commit to Vision Zero reforms and increased active transportation funding.

Day of Action Schedule:

  • 8:30am: Faster ride leaves downtown Portland for Salem
  • 8:30am: General ride leaves Wilsonville for Salem
  • Early afternoon: Non-cycling participants carpool/take transit from Portland to Salem
  • 9:00am-5:00pm: Lobby your Senator and Representative for Safer Streets and dedicated funding for active transportation.
  • 2:00pm-Meet up in front of Oregon State Capitol (Capitol Mall Area)
  • 5:00pm-8:00pm: Witness and testify at the Legislature’s Transportation Subcommittee Hearings. Recruit your state senator or representative to testify with you.
  • 8:00pm: Candlelight vigil for those needlessly killed on Oregon roads at the Oregon State Capitol.

Oregon State Capitol:
900 Court St NE, Salem, OR 97301
