New Orleans Jazz Comes to #SalemOR Public Library

Devin Phillips and New Orleans Straight Ahead Play New Orleans Jazz

at Salem Public Library

Devin Phillips and his quartet, New Orleans Straight Ahead, will open the Salem Public Library’s Fall Concert Series with a show featuring their brand of authentic New Orleans jazz.

The performance will take place on Friday, October 2 in Loucks Auditorium.

The concert, like all programs sponsored by Salem Public Library, is free and open to the public.

Born in New Orleans, Phillips graduated with top honors from the prestigious New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, whose alumni include Branford Marsalis, Harry Connick, Jr. and Nicholas Payton. He began building a career playing sax in the local jazz scene and playing festivals around the world. When Hurricane Katrina hit, Phillips was left with little more than his sax and his family, scattered throughout the country. He took advantage of a program offered by the Portland Jazz Festival to resettle musicians in Portland.

Since then Phillips has gone on to win awards from Jazz at Lincoln Center, the United States State Department, and The Oregon Arts Council. In May he was inducted into the Jazz Society of Oregon’s Hall of Fame.

This event is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Salem Public Library.

Free tickets are now available at the information desk at the main library and at the West Salem Library.

For more information on this and other events at Salem Public Library, visit www.salemlibrary.org or call 503-588-6052.

Oregon Network for Compassionate Communication Picnic at Minto Brown Park in #SalemOR – TODAY!

The Oregon Network for Compassionate Communication (ORNCC) wants to facilitate the coming together of Nonviolent Communication enthusiasts to meet, support, and inspire one another so we can belong to an NVC community that works together for a more collaborative and peaceful state.
With that goal in mind, ORNCC is sponsoring a picnic in Salem on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 10am to 4pm at the covered area in Minto-Brown Park.
The primary purpose of this picnic is to offer people in the Salem-area NVC community an opportunity to connect with each other.

Others interested in NVC are also welcome at the picnic.

ORNCC board members Gary Baran (Eugene), Bryn Hazell (Bend), and Mark Babson (Salem) plan to attend.

ETHNIC DANCES & MUCH MORE AT #SalemOR’s PEACE FESTIVAL ON 9/26

PRESS RELEASE

ETHNIC DANCES & MUCH MORE AT SALEM’S PEACE FESTIVAL

Salem’s Lancaster Mall will be the venue of Peace Festival, 11 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Saturday, September 26, 2015.

The Festival will feature dances of India, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, and Samoa, and music by Jan Michael Looking Wolf, John Meyer, and children 7 to 16.

Also there will be display tables about Ethiopia, India, and several area organizations including Enlace, Multicultural Center, United Nations Association, Fellowship of Reconciliation, Paradise of Samoa, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Salem, and Silverton’s Peace Education Program.

Besides, several documentary videos will be screened in the Lancaster Mall Conference Room (next to Mall Office in suite 63). Polly’s Peace documents the life and work of Salem’s own peace hero, Polly Hare. Others pertain to matters like discrimination of Baha’is in Iran, struggles of Blacks for their civil rights in USA, and difficulties encountered by a Sikh family in early 20th century Astoria, OR.

Peace Festival is a part of 34 Days for Peace, a project of Oregonians For Peace (http://oregoniansforpeace.org), a Salem-area organization. It is a collaborative effort of area peacemakers – individuals and organizations.

Since its successful Opening Ceremony, at the First Congregational Church, on September 21, the International Day of Peace, about 30 different evens (including a bicycle ride) will be held, before the project ends with a special event on October 24, the United Nations Day, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation.

The events represent all aspects of peace – personal, interpersonal, international, and universal (including sustainability).

All events are free and open to public.

Alex Tizon: “Self, Story, and the Rise of Asian America” at WU in #SalemOR

Alex Tizon: Self, Story, and the Rise of Asian America

9/24/2015
7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

In 2014 Alex Tizon published a memoir-cultural history, Big Little Man: In Search of My Asian Self, a story about race, “outsiderdom,” and rising out of the hole of “being lesser.” What role do personal narratives play in the evolution of Asian American identity? How do these narratives fit into the ongoing national discussion of race? Tizon will address these questions, and give a personal glimpse of his own transformation at the dawn of what some people are calling the Asian Century.

Big Little Man: In Search Of My Asian Self has won a Lukas Book Prize from Columbia University, an Oregon Book Award, and an APALA Honor Award for Literature.

Alex Tizon is a former Seattle bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, and a former staff writer for the Seattle Times, where he was co-recipient of the 1997 Pulitzer Prize in investigative journalism. He has written for Salon and Newsweek, and has worked as a field producer for 60 Minutes. Tizon has reported on some of the most cataclysmic news events of recent times, including the 9/11 attacks, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Hurricane Katrina. He has contributed to the coverage of two presidential races, and has written profiles on heads of state, activists, immigrants, murderers and poets. He was a 2009-2010 Knight International Press Fellow based in Manila, where he tracked government efforts to alleviate poverty in the Philippines’ five poorest provinces. He has earned degrees from the University of Oregon and Stanford.

He currently teaches journalism at the University of Oregon.
