  • November 6: A talk with Sharon Edwards – Yoga Teacher, Spiritual Director and 1st Presbyterian Associate Pastor

Living Well. Dying Well

Those who have died with intention have taught us a way of being to enhance our living. This will be experiential evening, together we will practice offerings that involve the mind, body, and heart.

  • November 13: Reading, music, and discussion with Janine Carranza, RN and author of Bedside Portraits: On Hospice Time

An Invitation to the Bedside

The voice of the dying calls out to us. Sometimes it is a whisper or no words at all. Sometimes even when the voice is loud, we are not there to hear it. Hospice invites us to be there. A contemplative community invites us to listen, experience and respond. The writing and reading community invites us into the world of language, poetry, stories, prose, and more.

You are invited to hear first-hand stories and poems of 7-years reminiscing the lives and deaths of people who have inspired through connection. Beatrice Rose, a harpist thanatologist, will guide us with her expressive harp through real life story readings.

Janine Carranza, RN’s portraits from her newly published book BEDSIDE PORTRAITS, On Hospice Time, will be interlaced with the poetry of local social worker Mary Brutsaert, massage therapist Troy Maddox, chaplain Scott Wilson, Transitions facilitator Bob Daley, and Hospice nurses Rachel Houck and Mary Ellis.

Grass Roots Books and Music will be present for book purchases; author-signed copies to be available.

Following the performance, the acting members will lend themselves to conversation with the audience, in question-and-answer form, and discussion as inspired.

  • November 20: A talk with Cathy Neumann – Tibetan Buddhist Teacher

The Six Bardos: Journey of Mind Thru This Life & Beyond

In this presentation, the six bardos (or transition states of mind) will be discussed. From a Tibetan Buddhist perspective, each bardo presents an opportunity to awaken to our true nature and thus gain freedom from suffering in cyclic existence based on karma. Practices from the Buddhist tradition that help prepare us for this journey of mind will be highlighted.

There is now a Death Cafe in #SalemOR – Thurs. Oct. 3rd

Death Cafe Salem Oregon

Thursday, October 3, 2019 | 6:15 PM – 7:30 PM

Ike Box | 299 Cottage St NE, Salem

Where there is life there is death. Yet, in our society, we talk about “it” in hushed tones – if at all. The funeral industry has further distanced the living from the dead by literally taking the dead out of our hands.

Death Cafe is a group-directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. At a Death Cafe people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea or something, listen, and discuss death.

Jon Underwood, Founder of Death Cafe, said it best: “I’m motivated to do this work because I believe that engaging with death is both important and overlooked. My experience tells me that death can play a role in helping us enjoy life. I also believe that focusing on death can play a part in helping us get to grips with some big challenges – like supporting older people, climate change, a broken economic system and chronic global inequality. This may not immediately make sense but if we can face up to death we can face up to anything, no?” — Jon died on June 27, 2017 at age 44

“Tea and cake are one of the most important features to the event. They assist with creating a nurturing and supportive environment.” (Underwood, 2015).

Our guiding principles are respect, openness, and confidentiality. We are not pushing any religion or anti-religion, not selling anything, not an action or political group, not a support or grief counseling group, and do not meet to debate anything.

Our objectives are to gather together to listen and talk about about something we all have in common: death.

If you accept those principles, please join us!

We currently meet on the 1st Thursday of each month from 6:15 PM to 7:30 PM at Ike Box, 299 Cottage St NE, Salem.

Everyone is welcome to bring any thoughts about death and mortality including personal experiences, feelings, strong convictions, speculation, and just listening if that suits you. Come as you are and bring your ideas.
